What is the purpose of the UberSTAR internship program?
The UberSTAR internship program is designed to promote equal opportunity, inclusion, and access in tech by encouraging applications from women and underrepresented groups, including Black, Hispanic, Native American, students with disabilities, LGBTQIA+, and Veterans.
Who is eligible to apply for the internship?
The internship is open to all first or second year students enrolled full-time at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity. Students transferring from a community college into a four-year program are also eligible.
What are the basic qualifications needed for this internship?
Candidates must be actively pursuing a Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, have completed an introductory Computer Science course, be a first or second year student during application, and have basic programming experience in one or more application or systems languages (e.g., Go, Python, Ruby, Java, C/C++).
What kind of projects will interns work on?
Interns will work with their manager and mentor to drive exciting, ambiguous, and previously unsolved projects from end to end, which includes designing, developing, and/or testing software applications using the company technology stack.
Are there any preferred qualifications for this internship?
Preferred qualifications include proven software engineering experience through internships, work experience, coding competitions, or publications, experience building tools/infrastructure, a desire to be part of a team delivering impactful results, a dedication to writing maintainable software, and a willingness to learn new languages and methodologies.
Is the internship paid?
Yes, the UberSTAR internship is a paid student internship program.
What support will interns receive during the program?
Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with a manager and mentor, providing guidance and support as they drive their projects forward with independence.
