AI generated summary
- The candidate must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree course, have completed at least 2 years with an average 2:1 grade, possess experience using computers in physics or engineering, have strong grasp of physics concepts, ability to gain new skills independently, work well in a team, and have strong communication skills. Desirable qualifications include completing 3 years of the degree course and background knowledge or interest in particle accelerators.
- The candidate will research diagnostic equipment, design a Faraday cup, optimize electron suppression and thermal design through simulations, provide regular updates, maintain project documentation, and produce a detailed write-up of the final design.
Description
- The ISIS Neutron and Muon source is a world-leading research facility based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. Scientists from around the world use our advanced suite of instruments to probe materials on the atomic scale; conducting experiments designed to push the frontiers of clean energy, pharmaceuticals, materials engineering and many other subjects.
- At the heart of the facility is an 800 MeV synchrotron particle accelerator, producing intense proton beams that go on to create muons and neutrons for experiments. ISIS-II is a proposed successor for ISIS, and its driving accelerator is currently an exciting area of research. The successful candidate will join a small team of physicists and engineers and design a new diagnostic sensor for a prototype accelerator, the FETS-FFA.
