Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in working with the refugee community
  • Ownership of a car and a valid driver’s license and car insurance
  • Willingness to transport clients in their personal vehicle
  • Willingness to be flexible and accommodating to client needs
  • Familiarity with the Charlottesville public transportation system or a willingness to familiarize oneself with the Charlottesville public transportation system

Responsibilities

  • Attend Volunteer/Intern Orientation
  • Provide transportation for clients and their families to medical, dental, and vision appointments.
  • Develop and implement a transit orientation to familiarize clients with the available modes of public transportation they can use to attend medical, dental, and vision appointments.
  • Assist Health Team with administrative tasks (phone calls, filing, collecting signed paperwork, making medical appointments, etc.)
  • Assist clients on an as-needed basis (prescription assistance, medical bill assistance, etc.)
  • Be sensitive to the cultural and personality differences of the refugee clients. Respect their beliefs and values, which may differ from yours.
  • Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRC’s online Volunteer Dashboard.
