Off-cycle Internship

Business, Operations & StrategyLondon

Description

  • The Patient Involvement team plays a critical role at Cancer Research UK, as we ensure the voice of people affected by cancer is at the heart of our work.
  • We do this by supporting teams to consult, collaborate and partner with patients and loved ones, drawing on their unique experience and knowledge of being affected by cancer, to help increase the relevance, quality and impact of our work.
  • One element of this role is reaching out and building relationships with other organisations and charities who support people whose voices we want to make sure are included in our involvement work.
  • Your role would be to map out existing relationships across the team so that we have a solid understanding of where we currently stand, talk to team members and staff in the wider directorate to help prioritise where we should reach out to next. You will also work on identifying what we as a team can do to build stronger connections with organisations, we have existing contacts in, to make sure that we have a reciprocal relationship.
  • We have an existing Inclusion in Involvement Steering Group, who are people who feel that their experience of cancer is traditionally left out, misunderstood or underrepresented in research, information and communications around cancer. As part of your work, you will create and deliver a consultation for this group (with support from your line manager) to get their feedback on the topic and understand their thoughts as to approaches to connect with other organisations, what we as a team could offer, and other ways to engage with underrepresented demographics.

Requirements

  • Someone organised and comfortable with using Excel spreadsheets to capture large amounts of information.
  • Experience of networking and influencing, with the ability to build relationships with staff at other similar organisations.
  • An interest in health inequalities and a basic understanding of EDI and why it is important.
  • Confident and able to work independently and proactively when needed.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Area of Responsibilities

Business, Operations & Strategy

Responsibilities

  • Amalgamate all existing documents and spreadsheets that track relationships with other organisations into one place
  • Grade existing relationships with other organisations so we understand who we have strong relationships with, and who we have looser connections with
  • Prioritise organisations to reach out to (that we don’t have existing relationships with)
  • Understand what (if any) needs of other organisations we can support with to ensure that we build long lasting reciprocal relationships
  • To write copy for staff to use when reaching out to new organisations
  • To engage with other teams at CRUK to understand the demographics that will be prioritised over the next 3-5 years and to identify
  • To engage with other teams at CRUK who are also reaching out to similar organisation to improve the ‘connectedness’ of our approach and that multiple teams aren’t reaching out to the same contacts at the same time

Application process

  • Stage 1: Online application:
  • Complete an online application form – you’ll be asked to answer a motivational competency question and upload your CV.
  • In our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, we operate an anonymised shortlisting process. Please therefore ensure that you have completed the work history section of the application form in full and that you have answered all application questions, as this is the information we will be using to shortlist. CVs are required to be uploaded for all applications, as they will be collected for use later in the process.
  • Stage 2: Assessment:
  • If your initial application is successful you will then be invited to complete our new situational judgment test. The test poses real life scenarios that a CRUK intern might be met with in their day to day role and asks how you would tackle that scenario. This is un-timed and multiple choice. Please let us know if you think you might require adjustments for this assessment.
  • Stage 3: Audio Submission:
  • If you are successful in the previous stage, you will be asked to complete an audio submission, answering competency-based questions. The questions will be emailed to you and you will have a few days to submit a response via an audio recording (no video required).
  • Stage 4: Interviews:
  • If you are successful in the previous stage, you will then be invited to a face-to-face interview at our head office with representatives from the team you are applying to.
