Who is eligible to apply for the Law Student Volunteer position?
All law students, joint degree students, and LL.M. students are eligible to apply, provided they are U.S. citizens and can obtain and maintain a security clearance.
What qualifications are required for applicants?
Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school at the time of application and throughout their internship. Strong analytical, research, and writing skills are required, as well as a prior interest or experience in national security or criminal litigation being preferred.
Is the internship paid?
No, the internship is unpaid. However, if your school offers academic credit or work-study options, the office will work with you to meet those requirements whenever possible.
What will the intern's responsibilities include?
Intern responsibilities include assisting with ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions, researching legal questions, drafting memoranda or legal policy analyses, conducting factual research, and providing support for court hearings or trials.
Can interns participate in another internship while working with CES?
No, interns cannot participate in another internship while interning with the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section (CES).
How should applicants submit their application materials?
Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, legal writing sample (not to exceed ten pages), an unofficial law school transcript (if available), and the contact information for three references via email to CES_Intern_Applications@usdoj.gov, and cc: stephanie.ore-brooks@usdoj.gov. All materials should be combined into one PDF with the subject line reading: [LAST NAME] - CES 2025 (Spring, Summer or Fall) Internship Application.
What type of experience is preferred for candidates applying for this internship?
Prior interest or experience in national security or criminal litigation is highly preferred, and relevant coursework such as Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and Trial Practice is also helpful.
