Summer Internship

Research & Development, Science•Seattle

Description

  • Internships typically start in June and run through August/September.
  • Global Health Labs is seeking a Graduate-level or PhD candidate Intern to join a dynamic diagnostics R&D team that pushes the cutting edge of what is possible in cost, ease of use, and performance for assays designed for low resource settings in developing countries.

Role Summary:

  • The NAAT Assay Intern will support research, development and validation of diagnostic assays and novel assay platforms, in service of GH Labs’ mission. These novel platforms support health interventions for diseases that most disproportionately affect people in developing countries, including tuberculosis, malaria, parasitic infections, COVID-19, cervical cancer, and others. The Intern will be reporting to a senior research scientist. As a member of the Diagnostics R&D team that invents, designs, analyzes, prototypes, and tests new technologies to solve global health challenges using a highly multidisciplinary approach, the Intern will collaborate with colleagues in the Diagnostic team to support research, development, and advancement of new diagnostic tools (i.e., NAATOS) through optimization of novel nucleic acid amplification technology (NAAT), validation of sample preparation methods, and/or lab-based performance verification of an integrated NAAT device.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master’s or PhD program in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or other life-science related field with interest in global health.
  • Experience with isothermal nucleic acid amplification, lateral flow assay, sample preparation and purification.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in CRISPR-Cas system would be a plus.
  • Experience working in a BSL2 laboratory and accustomed to adhering to biological safety practices.
  • Skilled in experimental execution, with robust and practical laboratory skills, and excited about performing hands-on scientific work.
  • Demonstrated capacity to utilize and maintain a wide array of laboratory instrumentation and systems.
  • Experience in assay validation or clinical evaluations.
  • Highly proactive and self-directed in identifying personal knowledge and/or skill gaps, and adept at acquiring the technical background needed to fill those gaps.
  • Willingness to always question results, including their own.
  • Strong scientific integrity.
  • Strong team orientation.
  • Required Competencies:
  • GH Labs Success Factors: We believe there are a few prioritized key capabilities and behaviors that are critical to success for all roles at GH Labs. They are:
