Requirements

  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a vocational, associates, or certificate program within an optical machining or technology field of study. Experience or some coursework with mechanical/optical evaluation
  • Experience or some course work with handling optical materials
  • The ability to use hand tools and precision machining tools effectively is required.
  • The ability to test parts to ensure they meet finished specifications is required.
  • A mechanical aptitude is required which is sufficient to perform this role effectively.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.
  • Due to facility requirements, all candidates must be US citizens
  • Desired Skills:
  • Experience with optical alignment is desired.
  • Experience with lasers, imaging systems, optical metrology is desired.
  • Experience with interferometers and spectrometers is desired.
  • Experience working as a machinist with CNC machines is desired.
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting irregularity and surface requirements is desired.
  • Familiarity with the following items is desired: optical elements, lenses, rough and finish grind flats, prisms, mirrors, shop aids, test plates, and special shaped elements.
  • Experience with controlling contours, thickness wedge and surface quality.

Responsibilities

  • During the course of the 10-12 week internship you will work under general direction and from manufacturing process plans, engineering drawings, and specifications to perform a wide variety of complex optical fabrication processes including optical grinding and polishing. In addition you will complete measurements, data collection, and documentation required to verify compliance to optical MIL specifications using optical and mechanical measuring devices such as interferometers, gauges, and microscopes to evaluate optical components.
