Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a PhD degree in a highly numerate subject, such as a Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or another related technical field
  • Evidence of creative, high-quality academic work
  • Experience with at least one general purpose programming language
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Relevant skillset for the specific internship project that you have applied for
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a track record of communicating scientific results to colleagues and other audiences
  • Ability to take initiative and to work well as part of a team
  • Passion for translating academic expertise into an applied industrial setting

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of quantum algorithms and industrial applications, control systems for quantum computers, and/or the error correction schemes required for large scale quantum computing.
  • Research, devise and develop algorithms and software to enhance Riverlane’s capabilities in the above areas.
  • Contribute to one or more projects that are core to Riverlane’s scientific goals
  • Discuss ideas with colleagues and communicate research in the form of presentations and reports

What is the duration of the PhD internship?

The PhD internship is full-time and lasts between 3 and 6 months.

What is the stipend for the internship?

Interns receive a competitive stipend of £32,000 (pro rata).

Are applications open to students from outside the UK/Ireland?

We can only accept applications from current university students who are UK/Irish nationals or have UK/Irish settled/pre-settled status.

Is previous experience in quantum computing required?

No, we welcome and encourage applications from those who do not have a background in quantum computing.

What kind of projects will interns work on?

Interns will work on pre-defined projects designed to make use of their background and skills, with an emphasis on quantum algorithms, industrial applications, control systems, and error correction schemes.

The application deadline is Friday, 29th November 2024.

What should be included in the cover letter?

The cover letter should explain your preferred area of focus, either Quantum Error Correction Research, Building the Quantum Error Correction Stack, or Quantum Algorithms & Applications Research, as well as the skills and experience you can bring to the role.

Will Riverlane provide accommodation for the internship?

No, Riverlane is unable to pay for travel to Cambridge or accommodation in Cambridge.
