Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in a related field of study: International Relations/Affairs, Social Sciences, Communications, Marketing, History, Government, Arts & Humanities, International Business, Linguistics/Foreign Languages, Public Policy, Cultural Studies, Diplomacy
  • Demonstrated interest in public diplomacy, global engagement, non-profit leadership, international education, and exchange, or related fields;
  • Understanding of various social media platforms and applications, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn;
  • Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills;
  • Organized, detailed-oriented with the ability to be self-motivated;
  • Professional demeanor and the ability to perform duties in a dynamic and fast-paced environment;
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English; and
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • The Professional Exchange Program intern will work closely with a cross-section of staff teams and simultaneously work on multiple tasks and projects. Under the supervision and mentorship of the Professional Exchange Program Intern Coordinator and additional project staff, the intern will learn about the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and the Sports Visitor and Sports Envoy Programs (SVSEP), as well as other exchange activities within Global Connections.
  • Through short-term in-person or virtual engagements to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in various fields experience the U.S. firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts while on the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The intern will:
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of the IVLP in support of U.S. foreign policy goals;
  • Accompany international visitors virtually or in-person to meetings with local experts in various fields;
  • Plan and develop social media content and/or blogs to highlight ongoing programs and utilize social media to develop, strengthen, and maintain partnerships with program participants, supporters, organizations, etc.;
  • Assist in the development of project proposals, program itineraries, and arranging Washington, DC professional appointments for participants;
  • Conduct research and support the preparation of program materials for future projects; 
  • Additional duties relating to the work of the IVLP focused on citizen diplomacy, non-profit leadership, and organizational operations as assigned.
  • FHI 360’s Sports, Cultural, and Youth (SCY) team serves as the implementing partner for the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Visitor and Sports Envoy exchange programs. The intern will:
  • Support the SCY team in implementing the Sports Visitor and Sports Envoy Programs;
  • Make logistical arrangements for groups of international visitors to the United States, including travel, hotels, ground transportation, catering, and coordination with partners;
  • Assist with virtual program planning and implementation;
  • Produce project materials, including but not limited to arrival packets, name badges, and administrative documents;
  • Contribute to research or project activities as assigned by supervisor;
  • Organize and participate in team meetings and client calls (e.g., assisting with meeting preparation, meeting notes);
  • Contribute to project-related presentations, social media posts, blogs, reports, and/or manuscripts; and
  • Assist with project-related administrative tasks, as needed.
