Requirements

  • Undertaking a biological/biomedical degree
  • A current 2nd, 3rd or penultimate year undergraduate Edinburgh University student
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and IT skills
  • Conscientious in the performance of laboratory tasks to a high standard and in compliance with Health & Safety requirements
  • Must possess good organisational skills and be able to work as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • To extract DNA & RNA from blood and tissue, using existing standard operating procedures, and in accordance with agreed timelines, to produce a high quality and accurate product for genetic analysis (60%)
  • To generate Quality Control data and analyse, according to standard operating procedures, to ensure high quality DNA & RNA is produced (20%)
  • To take daily deliveries of samples and book these into the electronic laboratory management system to maintain an accurate sample inventory. Samples require sorting, labels produced and samples distributed to specific end points for processing and archiving in freezers (10%)
  • To maintain the general upkeep of laboratories so that Good Clinical Practice and health and safety standards are met or exceeded (5%)
  • To maintain accurate written records of worked performed, summarise recent work at regular lab meetings, assist in workload planning and suggest improvements in standard operating procedures to assist the lab manager in identifying any problems and to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget and to a high standard (5%)
