Off-cycle Internship

  • The Science Engagement team provides the science that inspires our supporters. The charity has an ambition to put science at the heart of our brand, and so this team has an essential role in finding and accurately telling compelling stories about our research through a wide variety of methods (written, video, animations, interactives, presentations etc.)
  • The Science Engagement team consists of former scientists and engagement specialists who work together to find creative ways of communicating our life-saving research to the public. Some of our main stakeholders are fundraisers who work out in their local communities. These fundraisers need to be able to bring the science to life and demonstrate the impact of our research to their supporters, often at very short notice. To support them with this, we have developed an instant-access platform called the Deliver Your Own Science (DYOS) hub.
  • The DYOS hub allows the fundraisers (who usually don’t have a scientific background) to access exciting and understandable science content that they can deliver themselves to their supporters. The hub offers a variety of pre-made presentations, videos featuring researchers and senior science leaders, and interactive activities that bring to life key science concepts. The hub is refreshed annually to ensure fundraisers have the most up-to-date and relevant science content at their fingertips.
  • This project will help reimagine the hub, making it better, more accessible and user friendly.

  • You’ll be able to bring to the role:
  • We are looking for an intern who learns quickly, is capable of independent work and can manage their own objectives responsibly
  • They must be good at staying on brief and working with a high degree of accuracy, as the credibility of CRUK’s science communications is very important.
  • They should be confident in asking questions, and putting forward suggestions and solutions to any problems that emerge.
  • An interest in communication/story telling would be desirable, as would creativity and an eye for design.
  • Positivity, good teamwork skills and a desire to get stuck in.

Area of Responsibilities

  • The Science Engagement intern will work closely with the Science Engagement Officer to lead the refresh of the DYOS hub. They will be responsible for:
  • Updating the user interface:
  • making the homepage easier to navigate
  • deciding homepage content vs. click through content
  • improving content display and accessibility
  • restructuring the DYOS hub around specific themes and content types
  • Updating the hub content:
  • Working with the Officer to coordinate the creation of new content across the team
  • Actively developing new creative content for the hub themselves e.g. general presentation introducing CRUK.
  • Enhancing the hub:
  • Scoping out ‘quick win’ additions that would enhance the hub with little effort
  • Integrating the hub with the Impact & Relevance (I&R) hub - a related hub that provides written content and stats on research across all cancers and locations.

Application process

  • Stage 1: Online application:
  • Complete an online application form – you’ll be asked to answer a motivational competency question and upload your CV.
  • In our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, we operate an anonymised shortlisting process. Please therefore ensure that you have completed the work history section of the application form in full and that you have answered all application questions, as this is the information we will be using to shortlist. CVs are required to be uploaded for all applications, as they will be collected for use later in the process.
  • Stage 2: Assessment:
  • If your initial application is successful you will then be invited to complete our new situational judgment test. The test poses real life scenarios that a CRUK intern might be met with in their day to day role and asks how you would tackle that scenario. This is un-timed and multiple choice. Please let us know if you think you might require adjustments for this assessment.
  • Stage 3: Audio Submission:
  • If you are successful in the previous stage, you will be asked to complete an audio submission, answering competency-based questions. The questions will be emailed to you and you will have a few days to submit a response via an audio recording (no video required).
  • Stage 4: Interviews:
  • If you are successful in the previous stage, you will then be invited to a face-to-face interview at our head office with representatives from the team you are applying to.
