What qualifications are required for the internship?
Candidates must have completed their sophomore year of college with a declared major in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related major.
Is there a minimum GPA requirement for applicants?
Yes, a recommended GPA of 3.00 is required.
What skills are preferred for this position?
Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel, are preferred.
What will the intern be doing during their time at LG&E and KU?
The intern will assist in receiving, analyzing, and reporting analytical results for various samples, maintain documentation of daily data, prepare laboratory reagents, and gain an understanding of compliance with safety procedures and water quality regulations.
Will the intern work independently or under supervision?
The intern will typically work under close supervision of Scientist(s) and/or experienced Laboratory Technician(s).
What types of samples will the intern work with?
The intern will work with samples from boiler water systems, cooling water systems, scrubber systems, as well as fuel samples, oil samples, and sorbent trap samples.
Are there opportunities for professional development during the internship?
Yes, the internship will provide opportunities to gain troubleshooting, problem solving, and analytical skills.
How important is understanding safety procedures in this role?
Understanding compliance with safety procedures regarding laboratory chemicals, including hazardous chemicals, is an important responsibility of the intern.
Are there any other duties the intern may need to perform?
Yes, the intern may be required to perform other duties as directed by management.
