Requirements

  • Preferred field(s) of study: GISc, Urban Planning, Geography, Data Science, Environmental studies, Public Policy.
  • Interested in learning, applying, and documenting data driven research methods.
  • Interested in translating complex methodologies and data intensive topics to non-expert audiences.
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program; recent graduates are also encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the mission of NYCEDC
  • Proven ability in using database and presentation tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to multi-task and manage deadlines
  • Proactive and able to work in collaborative, cross-functional teams
  • Must be able to work full-time and complete the entirety of the 12-week program

Responsibilities

  • The intern will be able to shadow the members of the team in meetings and will be assigned projects to support the team and NYCEDC’s projects. The MGIS Summer Intern can expect to work on the following:
  • Cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing place-based data related to NYC assets, projects, and initiatives.
  • Crafting static maps and dynamic web mapping applications for internal clients.
  • Tracking and updating active NYC projects boundaries and attributes.
  • Helping maintain and organize NYCEDC’s geospatial data library and mapping apps.
  • Conducting self-directed research on new place-based data, City programs and legislation, as well as other ad-hoc research projects that the MGIS team thinks are relevant.
