Requirements

  • Essential:
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2024
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Experience of working with scientific instrumentation (e.g. oscilloscopes, mechanical devices)
  • Highly motivated and able to show initiative
  • Computing skills, such as programming skills (e.g. Labview, Python, Matlab, CAD)
  • Able to work in a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Responsible approach to health and safety
  • Desirable:
  • Interest in physical sciences, such as molecular dynamics, non-linear optics and spectroscopy

Responsibilities

  • Instrument development;
  • design, build and characterise new optical and mechanical apparatuses
  • design diagnostic equipment for our high average laser (class 4) systems
  • develop software for system control and data acquisition
  • User support
  • preparing scientific experiments and getting acquainted with state-of-the-art scientific techniques in molecular spectroscopy
  • preparing chemical/biochemical samples for visiting scientists

  • Working with existing tools and developing novel methods for data analysis using various software packages
