Off-cycle Internship



  • This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2024 or later.
  • The Austin office hosts a collaborative group of water resources engineers that work with other professionals throughout the United States on water resources modeling projects. Typical projects involve helping local, state, and federal clients complete hydraulic structure design, floodplain management, stormwater management, and other watershed and stormwater planning projects. Some of the opportunities include:
  • Work on real engineering design in a highly collaborative working environment. Engage in professional development in the latest technology and methodologies to help our clients solve their most challenging water resources problems. Work on projects across Kansas, Missouri, and Mississippi as well as collaborate with various offices across the U.S.


  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related undergraduate program.
  • Demonstrated interest in Water Resources Engineering, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering or related Master's Degree or PhD program.
  • Experience using ArcGIS is a plus.
  • Experience suing HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HY-8 software is a plus.
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.

Area of Responsibilities



  • Work under the supervision of a Project Engineer supporting our hydraulics and hydrology group.
  • Support floodplain management, transportation engineering, drainage engineering, and stormwater master planning.
  • Perform surface water hydrologic and hydraulic modeling utilizing HY-8, HEC-SSP, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and ArcGIS software.
  • Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Learn basic principles of Water Resources Engineering. •Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
