Requirements

  • Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the social sciences, humanities, or law, with a focus on sociolegal studies, Indigenous studies, law and society, sociology of law, criminology, legal anthropology, critical security studies or a closely related field by the time of appointment, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
  • We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.
  • In particular, we seek a candidate whose areas of expertise span the study of law and society, with a focus in at least one of the following: law, colonialism and decolonization, property and dispossession, culture and power, science and technology studies, critical urbanism, border studies, environmental justice, new technologies (eg. artificial intelligence and surveillance strategies) and social disparities.
  • The successful candidate must have strong communication skills as well as demonstrated success in the latest developments in the field of sociolegal studies.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
  • Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence and academic promise commensurate with their career stage.
  • Research excellence and academic promise can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked field-relevant journals of international calibre, forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, a strong research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsement from referees of high standing.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through a record of teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
  • Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references.

  • They will be expected to teach core and elective courses in both the undergraduate and graduate program at the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies.
