The main focus of the Genetic Counselling Specialist Nurse role is to deliver and strategically lead the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme, as well as the Newborn Blood Spot Screening Programme, providing comprehensive information, guidance, and psychosocial support to individuals and couples at risk of serious haemoglobin disorders.
What kind of patients will I be working with in this role?
In this role, you will be working with individuals and couples identified as carriers or at risk of having a child affected by a serious haemoglobin disorder, particularly related to sickle cell and thalassaemia.
Is experience in genetic counselling necessary for this position?
While a post-registration qualification or significant experience in genetic counselling or haemoglobinopathies is desirable, applicants with relevant experience in haemoglobinopathy care or maternity/paediatrics are also considered.
What kind of support will I provide to patients?
You will provide specialist genetic counselling, emotional support, and guidance on reproductive choices, antenatal diagnostic procedures, and care coordination for women who choose to terminate their pregnancy following a diagnosis.
Will I be collaborating with other professionals in this role?
Yes, you will work in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams including Maternity Screening Services, Neonatal and Paediatric Teams, and HSL Laboratory Teams to ensure effective communication and care delivery.
