Requirements

  • BSN Preferred
  • Completion of UPMC Student Nurse Internship Program or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Good clinical judgment.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required prior to program start date OR must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination with (X) months of hire.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support

Responsibilities

  • 3 Main Med/Surg Unit:
  • 60 bed Medical/Surgical/Telemetry Stroke Unit
  • Patients with many diagnoses including CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, and kidney disease
  • 4 North Medical Progressive Care Unit:
  • Progressive Care Unit with diverse patient population, with a medical and procedural cardiology focus
  • Cardiac Focus Includes: Arrhythmias, MI, Hypertension, CHF, and patients who require cardiac and electrophysiology procedures (catheterizations, cardioversions, ablations, pacemakers, etc.)
  • Additional Diagnoses Include: COPD, Stroke, Sepsis, Diabetic Ketoacidosis
  • 4 South Surgical Progressive Care Unit:
  • Cardiac Surgery: CABG’s and Valves
  • Vascular Surgery: Carotid Endarterectomy’s, Angio’s with stents, Fem-pop bypass, amputations, mesenteric artery bypass, AAA repairs, etc
  • Fast paced learning environment with lots of IV drips, cardiac drains, and pulmonary/critical ill patients
  • 5 Pavilion Ortho:
  • 30 private beds focusing on both medical and surgical orthopedics and urology
  • High performing, team-based culture
  • Recognized by the health plan as a Center of Excellence for Total Joint Replacement
  • 6 South Surgical Oncology Unit:
  • 24 bed surgical oncology unit that specializes in the pre and post op phase of surgery
  • Patient population consists of primarily oncology patients with a diagnosis of colon or gynecological cancers
  • Spacious private rooms that are ADA compliant
  • 6 Pavilion Med/Surg Oncology:
  • 30 bed- private rooms
  • Oncology, Cardio-thoracic surgery, Post op liver resection surgeries, med/surg patients
  • Inpatient Chemotherapy and Trans-Arterial Chemoembolization (TACE) patients
  • 6 Main Med/Surg Unit:
  • 34 bed Medical/Surgical Unit
  • Diverse patient population including hospice care with unique models of care
  • Telemetry Monitoring
  • Rehab Unit:
  • 24 bed Post-Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation
  • Primary Patient Population includes Stroke and Neurological Impairments
  • Rehab team collaboration with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, SLP, and PM
  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit:
  • 16 bed unit that specializes in cardiac and thoracic surgery
  • Patient population also consists of vascular surgery and medical cardiology patients
  • Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit:
  • 16 bed unit that specializes in respiratory failure, sepsis, stroke, and renal failure
  • Patient population also consists of GI and neurosurgery cases
  • Emergency Department:
  • Certified Stroke ED
  • STEMI’s/NSTEMI’s
  • Sepsis Care Leaders
  • Competency in Age Related Care
  • PACU:
  • Comprised of Pre-op, PACU, Post-op, and Acute Interventional Pain Service
  • Provide a wide array of surgical specialties
  • Average 60-70 cases per day
