Responsibilities

The Hub Coach will provide career coaching services for LSA undergraduates, with the starting point being the diverse goals and aspirations of liberal arts & sciences students. A candidate who understands and can demonstrate a history of student engagement and advocacy for inclusivity is essential. Using the LSA Opportunity Hub's approach to coaching and student learning, you will help liberal arts & sciences students reflect on their experiences to gain an understanding of their interests and potential career goals. This includes methods for helping students identify patterns and themes across their LSA education that relate to their interests, values, and goals, and in making intentional connections to career exploration and development opportunities available through the Opportunity Hub, LSA, U-M, and the outside world to inform their next steps. In particular, you will work with students to connect them directly to employment opportunities and to opportunities provided by alums.
The Hub Coach will place students at the center of the co-creative process of defining and preparing for career success. You will form relationships and conduct strategic outreach across LSA units, departments, and U-M student groups to further expand the reach and awareness of the LSA Opportunity Hub. To complement and amplify the work of coaching and outreach, the Hub Coach will frequently collaborate with the Opportunity Hub's student experience, alum engagement, employer engagement, mentorship, communications, and learning, data, and assessment teams.
Coach LSA undergraduate students on articulating the connection between their education and their professional aspirations with a particular focus on the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career readiness competencies. Connect students directly with alum and employment opportunities, including Hub-sourced internships, job-shadowing, and third-party experiential learning opportunities. Prepare LSA undergraduates, individually and in groups, for engaged learning opportunities; work with students to co-create plans for identifying career pathways and developing their professional identity. Sample coaching topics include, but are not limited to: Goal setting, Funding options for internships, Internship preparation and search, Interview preparation, Volunteer, research, and other hands-on experience, Connecting with LSA alums, Resume, cover letter, personal statement, portfolio, or LinkedIn, Negotiations, Exploring curricular and co-curricular opportunities, Hub resources and activities, Post-graduation planning (graduate school, gap year, etc.), Professional development, Reflection, Self-exploration. Work directly with students in developing knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in a lifelong process of connecting their education, skills, interests, and values to their next steps after Michigan. Use the FUEL coaching model (Zenger & Stinnett, 2010), and other career and student development theory-based models to conduct one-on-one appointments with students through scheduled and drop-in meetings, in-person or virtually. Remain up-to-date and effectively communicate Hub resources, which encompass eLearning materials, ALA course offerings, special events, and programming. Appropriately refer students to university units, departments, and programming as needed. Provide coaching insights in collaboration with the Hub's instructional designer, to create, implement, and provide feedback on intentionally designed, learning-focused interactive tools/worksheets to assist in the coaching process. Remain current on best practices in student engagement and career education, the particular needs and experiences of undergraduate student populations, and labor market trends.
Form relationships and conduct strategic outreach across LSA units, departments, and U-M student groups, particularly those that serve historically under-served populations. Engage U-M students and student organizations in career development initiatives via strategic outreach and relationship-building across LSA units, departments, and student groups, particularly those that serve historically under-served populations. Support the Opportunity Hub's outreach model via meetings and regular communication with partners across LSA and U-M. Contribute ways to expand and facilitate Hub engagement with LSA students, units, and departments, in alignment with the Hub's outreach model. Design and deliver workshops, programs, and events, virtually and in-person, utilizing the Opportunity Hub's Active Learning Cycle. Collaborate across Hub teams to ensure that events and opportunities align with student needs. Represent the LSA Opportunity Hub at campus and community events. Engage with alums and employers during Hub events. Assist with the onboarding and training of new professional and student staff.
Lead and execute projects in alignment with annual Coaching & Outreach team goals to further the Hub's mission. Contribute insights based on individual coaching session experiences regarding student growth and development in alignment with the Hub's professional identity development model. Identify and respond to student career development needs through innovative programming and student-centered solutions. Provide assistance in the oversight of undergraduate student interns during coaching events and engage interns in the Opportunity Hub model of professional development. Contribute coaching perspectives to assist in the development and maintenance of ongoing Opportunity Hub objectives for career coaching.
Review and assess student feedback data to inform future Hub services and develop an individual yearly performance plan. Maintain timely records of individual coaching interactions through both Hub and college note-taking online systems. Maintain timely records of group coaching session attendance and follow-up communication through Learning, Data, and Assessment-created tracking systems. Attend and actively contribute individual and group coaching insights during weekly coaching & outreach team meetings. Provide feedback in the maintenance of individual and group coaching evaluation mechanisms and processes, as needed.
