Requirements

  • Graduate from a recognized community college for Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant or equivalent education and experience that are acceptable to the Laboratory Director
  • Experiences with manual assays such as ELISA
  • Experiences with Histopathology techniques
  • Experiences with loading specimens on automated platforms
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Assistant from a professional organization (i.e., OSMT, CSMLS)
  • Familiarity with IATA and completed training
  • Two to five years’ experience within the last five years
  • Experience primarily in chemistry; histology
  • Experience in phlebotomy
  • Working knowledge of computer systems, i.e., Laboratory Information System (LIS) and MS Office applications (Word, Excel)
  • Proven ability to attend to work regularly with flexible hours when required
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate specimens arrived in the laboratory based on required QA process
  • Receive and accession specimens in LIS. Label specimens, containers, requisitions, tissue cassettes
  • Load/unload blood, urine, tissues, slides, etc. onto/from automated equipment, tissue/slide processors, stainers, coverslippers, robotic handlers, etc. following instructions and abiding by established policies and procedures
  • Assist in maintaining equipment, temperature logs, inventory control, ordering/storing supplies, and other clerical functions
  • Perform tests that do not require independent judgement, i.e., manual research assays under supervision of a Laboratory Technologist or accepted equivalent
  • Enter data and results in proper databases and Excel/or LIS
  • Centrifuge, aliquot and distribute specimens to testing areas
  • Package referred out specimens for shipping/unpack referred in specimens
  • Pick up/deliver specimens as required
  • These duties will be undertaken in accordance with the technician's level of training and the policies of Mount Sinai Services.
