  • A minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience
  • Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring

  • Previous experience as a clinical instructor or placement supervisor
  • Preceptor/mentor training and experience with nursing learners

  • Understanding of principles of risk management, emergency procedures and infection prevention and control preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, change management and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with individuals across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the proven ability to manage competing demands

Responsibilities

  • Support training, mentorship and integration of Clinical Externs at the organizational and unit level
  • Establish a clear onboarding and education pathway for Clinical Externs
  • Contribute to Clinical Extern onboarding, ongoing education and development within their defined scope
  • Create, adapt and deliver orientation, learning and professional development resources
  • Assist Clinical Externs to learn about and understand their role and scope of practice
  • Provide ongoing support and mentorship to clinical teams in understanding roles and responsibilities for nurses working with Externs
  • Support Clinical Extern scheduling and departmental assignment
  • Implement organizational guidelines for the Clinical Extern scope of practice, and delegations to support practice where required
  • Support development and implementation of standardized Clinical Extern assignment and supervision structures and tools in clinical areas where Externs practice
  • Collaborate with unit teams to optimize Clinical Extern utilization to provide required patient care
  • Coordinate and deliver preceptor/mentor training for nurses working with clinical externs, learners and new hires
  • Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills attainment
  • Evaluate and evolve the structure for ongoing Clinical Extern and practice area support (e.g., debriefs, check-ins, ongoing laddered education, issue resolution)
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of Clinical Externs and the overall program
  • Collaborate with PCMs on performance evaluation and remediation
  • Support monitoring and tracking of budget and human resource allocation
  • Promote Clinical Extern staff wellness and team well-being
  • Serve as a liaison and conduit between the unit leadership, Professional Practice and Clinical Operations
  • Support transition to practice for Clinical Externs transitioning as new graduates into RN/RPN roles at Sinai Health
  • Contribute to the onboarding and orientation, training and education of new employees including participants in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee
  • Support the development and implementation of academic practice education and training initiatives in collaboration with Professional Practice and Quality
  • Perform other duties related to the position, as required
