Requirements

  • Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
  • Additional Required Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate will be expected to make high impact contributions of direct relevance to phase transitioning flows that leverage her/his expertise and demonstrated accomplishments in the following areas:
  • Strong grasp of numerical methods in CFD and ability to implement and extend them in original or existing C++ and Python-based codes.
  • Knowledge of multiphase continuum models for solid-liquid systems with phase-change.
  • Ability to leverage high-performance computing resources for large-scale simulations.
  • Use of Python for analysis and orchestration of workflows.
  • Performing simulations studies that inform and collaborate with experimental projects.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams and to deliver high-quality results within aggressive timelines.
  • Track record of troubleshooting and problem-solving complex systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with open-source C++/Python libraries used in CFD, e.g. OpenFOAM, AMReX, MFEM, PyFR
  • Experience in computational structural mechanics using finite-element or material-point methods.
  • Strong publication record
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Add capabilities to existing scientific software tools as necessary to achieve project objectives, including development of models for phase transitions that incorporate molecular-level physics.
  • Work with collaborators at NREL and other potential partners (national laboratories, universities, and industry) to identify appropriate computational models and/or model extensions, and design and execute simulation and analysis campaigns to efficiently address client needs.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with researchers and engineers operating relevant reactor systems to define the requirements of the simulations/models, obtain necessary data as input for the simulation, and provide meaningful interpretation of the results to guide experiments, operations, and engineering designs.
  • Work with management and senior staff to plan and design projects, determine technical objectives, and interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.
  • Disseminate knowledge through publications in technical journals and presentations at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations.

Mission & Purpose

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a Department of Energy national lab, is #TransformingEnergy as the nation's primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL's Mission: NREL develops renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and practices, advances related science and engineering, and transfers knowledge and innovations to address the nation's energy and environmental goals. NREL's Strategy: NREL has forged a focused strategic direction to increase its impact on the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) and our nation's energy goals by accelerating the research path from scientific innovations to market-viable alternative energy solutions.
