  • At least 3 years’ experience as a trade-book production editor or freelancer
  • Strong copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • A detailed familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style, and general facility with modern copyediting style
  • Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Capable of rising to a challenge, and comfortable asking for help when needed
  • Expertise with electronic copyediting, using Microsoft Word
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat PDF markup tools
  • Preferably experience working on 4-color books

Responsibilities

  • Handle production editorial work for original titles (both 1-color and 4-color) from manuscript to bound book/ePub, as well as hardcover-to-paperback conversions, across many genres, including popular and literary fiction, biography, memoir, history, sports, self-help, cooking, current affairs, business, and religion
  • Hiring, for original titles, freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers and reviewing their work through all passes, including clearing manuscripts post-copyediting and collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs
  • Performing quality checks on ebook files
  • Copyediting jacket/cover copy and second-format additional material, including sales quotes and reading group guides, and proofreading jackets/covers, captions, and additional material
  • Electronic coding/tagging manuscripts for design and composition
  • Collaborating with production, design, and managing editorial departments on and maintaining book schedules
