Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
  • RNs – Active or Eligible Registration with CRNA or RPNs – Active or Eligible Registration with CRPNA College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Addictions and Mental Health experience within the last 3 years with an FTE.
  • New grads who have completed a final preceptorship in PES will be considered.
  • Experience working in community crisis support will also be considered.
  • Minimum typing speed of 60 WPM.
  • This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024.

  • Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone preferred.
  • Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques preferred.
  • Knowledge of how to intervene is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act preferred.
  • Experience in various risk assessments an asset.
  • IV Certification an asset.
  • Experience with Dragon Medical One Dictation an asset.

Responsibilities

  • As a Registered Nurse in PES, you will work within an interprofessional team that specializes in the delivery of quality acute psychiatric care to patients presenting in crisis.
  • Using Trauma Informed Care, the recovery model, and an understanding of the DSM V-TR, you will support patients in understanding their mental health and developing strategies to manage their mental health.
  • You will provide direct bedside care to patients awaiting an inpatient bed or assessment by PES or ED.
  • As a consulting PES Nurse, you will conduct holistic assessments to determine level of illness and risk and make recommendations to Emergency Physicians and Psychiatrists regarding the plan of care.
  • You will collaborate with services and organize referrals to community services or admission to inpatient units based on client need.
  • You will assess and develop, in collaboration with the patient, an effective plan and identify appropriate services for clients and arrange care.
  • In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families.
  • You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.
  • You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

The hourly pay rate ranges from $39.21 to $51.46, depending on qualifications and experience.

Will I receive training for this position?

Yes, if you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five years, completion of specific online courses is required to refresh your knowledge.

Are there any preferences for additional skills or qualifications?

Preferred qualifications include nursing experience in an acute care setting, knowledge of addiction and mental health resources, verbal de-escalation techniques, and IV certification, among others.

What happens if I get hired into this position?
