Requirements

  • Current certification or eligibility for certification of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario is required
  • Candidate will be a diploma graduate of a recognized college or school of nursing or equivalent (i.e., certificate RPN with added courses in medication administration, phlebotomy, and health assessment)
  • Oncology Nursing – Registered Practical Nurse (Post-Graduate) preferred
  • A physical assessment course required
  • Current BCLS required
  • de Souza Foundations in Oncology course to be commenced within 6 – 12 months of hire
  • Minimum of 2 years acute care medical/surgical experience required
  • Recent experience with inpatient medicine, oncology and palliative patient care preferred
  • Demonstrates knowledge, experience and the ability to care for patients with the following: initiation and maintenance of IV therapy, administration of medication above the drip chamber, blood and blood product administration, central venous access devices (CVAD), blood glucose monitoring, nasogastric tubes, wound management skills, routine infection control practices, normal and abnormal blood values
  • Previous experience in providing and delivering patients and families with educational teaching
  • Demonstrates excellence in communication skills and interprofessional teamwork
  • Demonstrates strong attention to patient and family-centred care and establishing therapeutic relationships
  • Evidence of on-going professional development preferred
  • A positive work and attendance record is essential

Responsibilities

  • - Provide high quality, compassionate care to patients in the oncology unit.
  • - Initiate and maintain IV therapy as required.
  • - Administer medication above the drip chamber and blood and blood products.
  • - Manage central venous access devices (CVAD) and perform blood glucose monitoring.
  • - Insert and manage nasogastric tubes and provide wound management.
  • - Follow routine infection control practices.
  • - Monitor and interpret normal and abnormal blood values.
  • - Provide education and support to patients and families.
  • - Collaborate effectively with interprofessional team members.
  • - Establish therapeutic relationships focused on patient and family-centered care.
  • - Participate in ongoing professional development initiatives.
