Requirements

  • A relevant university degree, or post-graduate degree in the social sciences or resource management, majoring in Archaeology and/or Anthropology, including experience in research, scientific study, investigative techniques, report preparation, and project management.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively more responsible technical leadership experience conducting investigative archaeological studies, including the coordination of multi-disciplinary teams and regulatory relations, is required.
  • The successful candidate will have strong analytical and planning skills, with a comprehensive understanding of issues relating to cultural heritage and archaeology, including historic and current Aboriginal issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are a requirement.
  • The successful candidate must be a Registered Consulting Archaeologist (RPCA) with the British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists (BCPA) or must demonstrate clear qualifications to be able to register as a RPCA with the BCAPA.
  • A condition of employment for this job is maintaining a Class 5 Driver's License in good standing.
  • As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to take a written test/assessment.
  • Please note some travel will be required in the role.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will be a key member of the Archaeology/Heritage team at BC Hydro.
  • This role includes implementing archaeological management across lines of business, fostering of key regulatory relationships and relationships with First Nations organizations, contributing to the development of standards and best practices, planning annual work and budgets for archaeology management, management of province-wide regulatory compliance programs, preparation of archaeological and heritage management and mitigation plans, leading multi-party technical working groups, developing mitigation, monitoring, and protection planning; and managing contractors responsible for fieldwork and impact assessment.
  • This includes cost control, contract management, quality assurance coordination, peer review, and monthly tracking of invoices, progress, forecasts, variances, scope, reporting, and deliverables.
  • The candidate will be experienced in heritage management for small to large-scale construction projects throughout all project phases, including those undergoing Environmental Assessment review process.
  • They will manage archaeological or environmental contractors; liaise with regulatory agencies; engage in public and stakeholder consultation; consult with First Nations and Aboriginal communities, implement or use cultural or Traditional Land Use Studies.
  • The candidate will possess advanced technical writing skills and be able to prepare technical reports, including reports for regulators and senior management within BC Hydro.
  • They must be able to negotiate with contractors, regulators, stakeholders, and First Nations on heritage issues, and have an awareness of and interest in BC Hydro’s strategic direction.
  • They must also be able to communicate technical information in public meetings, consultations, or hearings.
