Queen Mary, University Of London (QMUL)
navigation.about
Queen Mary Climbing, one of the oldest clubs within the university, takes a number of attributes from the club of decades ago. This includes our club’s focus on outdoor activity. We aim to provide multiple outdoor climbing trips, under the supervision of an experienced committee. Locations that we will aim to visit include Sheffield and the famous Peak District, Portland Cliffs and Fontainblue Forrest in France. These outdoor climbing trips are suited both to the novice climber, without any experience, as well as seasoned climbers looking to push their limits. However, Rock Climbing has moved more from a culture into a sport in recent years. The advent of national and international climbing competitions has resulted in indoor climbing with a more gymnastic influence to come to the front of the climbing scene. Our club has evolved similarly: we compete in the inter-university BUCS completion, but this year we are looking to expand the number of competitions our club enters. This is in part due to the fact that our club has been doing progressively better in BUCS in recent years, but also to reflect and celebrate the fact Rock Climbing is now an Olympic sport.A number of people in the club and committee are both lifelong climbers as well as brand new climbers; and this is a reflection of the welcoming nature of the club.It is important to note that the vast majority of climbers in the club climb in a non-competitive format at the famous Mile End Climbing wall three times a week: Monday and Friday evenings and Wednesday afternoons.Joining the Climbing Club is a great way to start a new sport that allows you to track your physical progression, see parts of the county you wouldn’t conventionally visit and reignite your apelike qualities.
