Cricket has been growing at the university over the past fewyears and we are very proud of what we have been able to achieve with the sport in the face of the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being buoyed by a particularly optimistic term in the winter nets, we were unable to play a competitive game last season due to the effects of the lockdown; something which our divisional rivals would’ve been thankful for based on the Stuart Broad-Esque pace some of our bowlers had unlocked in the pre-season… ! We look to capitalise this unbeaten year and approach the next with the same positivity and excitement despite the difficulties we will invariably encounter in achieving match fitness in the first term. Usually, we would be beginning the winter nets at the Ken Barrington Centre at the Kia Oval on Tuesday nights in preparation for the season ahead but, of course, we will have to adapt slightly. As soon as it is possible to get down to nets (indoor or out) and train together, we absolutely will but in the meantime, some slightly more social meetings may have to suffice; sitting in the union and discussing the nuances of Ben Stokes’ 135 not out at Headingly sounds just as productive as an hour of cardio workout to me. Our club isn’t just about playing cricket, it’s about meeting new people with similar interests and spending countless hours talking about this beautiful game that we all enjoy so dearly. All are welcome to become members: batters and bowlers of all abilities or anyone who simply appreciates watching the crafting of a cracking innings on a summer’s afternoon. I’ll be sure to keep all members abreast with developments in competitive fixtures; indoor tournaments often crop up in the months prior to the outdoor season’s debut. Feel free to check out the Facebook page, Goldsmiths UCC (disclaimer: that will receive a bit more attention as we begin the year). There is also some dapper looking kit available; practical for playing in and comfortable for the long stints in the pavilion, looking out the window, praying for the rain to stop.
