Welcome! Never has there being a time in history when the presence of university conservative associations has been as vital as today. Sir Winston Churchill once remarked, ‘To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.’ British society is changing more rapidly than ever, and we as young conservatives have a critical role to ensure that the values on which our nation is built are not lost to history. NUCA promotes conservative values on campus and in local politics by taking part in public debates and campaigning for local candidates. We are a broadchurch composed of One-nation Tories, Thatcherites, and a multitude of small-c conservatives. So, if you are new to university and looking for a community of like-minded individuals, NUCA is the place to be! Port and Policy Our flagship event is Port and Policy. Held once a month at New Beeston Conservative Club, Port & Policy is a lively parliamentary-style debate attended by people of all political beliefs. NUCA is the home of free speech on campus, and we don’t shy away from debating difficult topics. Motions last year included, ‘This House Believes abortion should be illegal,’ ‘This House Believes in net-zero immigration,’ as well as lighter motions like ‘This House would reinstate absolute monarchy.’ This is one you won’t want to miss! Talks & Social Events We frequently invite conservative guest speakers to campus. Over recent years, speakers have included Danny Kruger, Calvin Robinson and Theresa May. We also host regular socials. We frequently attend Mooch Karaoke on Tuesdays and pub quizzes at the White Lion on Wednesdays. Debates Public debates are an important way of promoting conservative values on campus and are an excellent opportunity for members to get involved. Last year, we supported the motion ’This House Believes the government should prioritise the cost of living crisis over achieving net-zero' in front of nearly 100 people and won over nearly a half of the audience. We have an excellent relationship with the Debating Union and we look forward to arranging more debates this year. VP Dinner The Vice President will arrange our annual dinner with a conservative guest of honour. Keep your eyes peeled to find out who this year’s guest will be. Trips to Parliament Last year NUCA visited parliament twice at the invitation of our Honorary President, Sir John Hayes and Lord Hannan which proved to be unforgettable experiences. Fear not if you missed out as the Earl of Effingham has invited NUCA back this year! Campaigning NUCA has also had great success campaigning for the Conservative Party. Our Campaigns Officer frequently organises trips to support local MPs and counsellors. Recently we have organised campaigning sessions with Cllr Ben Bradley MP and Tom Randall MP. FAQs Do I need to be a member of the Conservative party to be a member of NUCA? Nope! Membership is open to anyone who pays the fee. As mentioned above, we have a multitude of small-c conservatives who aren’t aligned with the party and even some on the left who enjoy a healthy debate! That said, we have a close relationship with the local Conservative associations, a relationship we want to maintain. Do I need to be a member to attend Port and Policy? Nope! Not only do you not have to be a member, we encourage those who aren’t members to attend. We often have attendees from all across the political spectrum and it serves to make debates even more lively! That said, tickets for non-members are slightly more expensive (£10) than for members (£7). Get membership!!! To quote Lady Thatcher, “it’s always better where the Tories are”!
