Student Action for Refugees

LSE STAR is part of the national network of student groups working to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK by promoting positive images of refugees, volunteering for local refugee projects and campaigning for refugees' rights. We are a friendly and passionate group that aims to make a difference in our country and community through education, fundraising and volunteering.LSE STAR is an active society that runs events and projects throughout the academic year, culminating in our annual Refugee Week.We are looking forward to welcoming new members and seeing what we can achieve this coming year! Membership LSE STAR membership allows you to become part of a dedicated and passionate society and meet loads of awesome and like-minded people! Being part of the society allows you to influence the focus and events of the society and run for committee and sub-committee positions. Events and Activities Campaigning;We support and organise a variety of campaigns over the academic year in areas such as immigration detention and Families Together. This year we focussed particularly on campaigning to change the restrictive rules that keep refugees in the UK apart from those they love due to the law on families reuniting.Fundraising;We fundraise through a variety of events such as bake sales and our collaborative 'Run for Refugees' with LSE SU Amnesty.Volunteering;We recruit volunteers for programs run by partner organisations, such as Notre Dame Centre for Refugees and Salusbury World. This year we also established our own English Conversation Club to help support refugees and asylum seekers in the community.Educating;We hold a variety of events throughout the academic year, including movie screenings, panel discussions and member presentations. Our flagship Lent Term activity is Refugee Week, involving a week of events and fundraising!Socials;We have a variety of socials throughout the year, including discussion and self care events for volunteers and socials to the table tennis bar Bounce.Socials ranging from Singaporean celebrations (Chinese New Year) to more universal favourites (clubbing/Halloween bar nights)
