Students for Global Health KCL

King's College London (KCL)

About

We are the KCL branch of Students for Global Health UK, a student network and registered charity tackling global and local health inequalities through education, advocacy and community action. We have a vision of 'a fair and just world in which equity in health is a reality for all' and believe that as students our voice is essential to bringing about an equitable and healthy world of tomorrow.  With our events this year (2021/21) covering themes such as - Decolonising Healthcare, Global Mental Health, and Social Determinants of Health - there's something for everybody! Want to dive into the latest debates about humanitarianism and supporting LMICs in times of disaster? Ever wondered how people access mental healthcare in countries like Iraq or Nigeria? How do you perform surgeries when your hospital doesn't have reliable power or light? These are just some of the questions we're fascinated by. We also offer opportunities through our sister group, UAEM KCL (Universities Allied for Essential Medicines) who do amazing work around access to medicines - make sure you sign up here to find out more about them and how you can get involved! We are a society for all interested students across King's, not just for health students! Why buy membership? Your membership fee goes towards our vital work - making it easier for more people to get involved in Global Health at a local, national and international level! As a national charity, branches from across the UK convene at National Conferences, Assemblies and Weekends, where world leading and pioneering experts meet with us! Your membership subsidises travel to our national conferences and assemblies (in non-COVID times), making it cheaper for more people to go! As a member of SfGH you are eligible to propose policy motions and join national working groups on Global Health Topics and have your say in the running of the national charity. See below for more information on who we are, what we do and how you can get involved: WHY we exist Many children in low income settings are dying needlessly from malnutrition or curable diseases Many adults are dying because of lack of access to medicines There are health inequalities both in the UK and globally which we need to address. Such issues include migration and health, climate change, access to medicines, maternal health, conflict and health, mental health and ethical procurement in the NHS.WE CARE about the health of other people in the world We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE HOW we tackle these issues By EDUCATING about global health issues By ADVOCATING for change to improve health for all people worldwide By TAKING ACTION to improve health for all people worldwide  WHAT you can do JOIN US! We would love for as many students as possible to join so we can all work together! Get involved with our SMALL WORKING GROUPS and CAMPAIGNS (both locally and nationally) so that you can play a part in making a difference Come along to our SOCIALS and meet others who also want to make a change! Contact Us: Join our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter and Instagram for more information and updates.
