Requirements

  • We're looking for people who are curious and ready to evolve how you think and work. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. If you can share your knowledge and ideas and encourage others to do the same; whilst having a desire to deliver excellent services for clients – we'd like to hear from you.
  • We are looking for candidates who are working towards a degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Railway Engineering, Railway Systems Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering or Systems Engineering.
  • You should be able to start this opportunity in September 2024.

Responsibilities

  • As an industrial placement student, your main focus will involve providing valuable support to the team in the design and management of rail infrastructure projects, for clients such as Network Rail, Nexus and Translink. The rail engineering sector is a rapidly growing field within the industry, offering a wealth of opportunities to learn and innovate. Your tasks will be diverse, encompass various technical aspects and give you the opportunity to witness the scale of different projects and how to take theories in the classroom, and use them in the real world.
  • You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you'll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we'll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills.
  • We ask that you are flexible on location as you may at times be required to work from other locations across the UK. This is dependent upon the needs of our clients and business.
  • You'll learn from others and begin creating your professional network ready for when you graduate. There are regular learning sessions with our leadership team, opportunities for site visits to local projects and all kinds of social events that will support your learning and development.
  • Our aim is to welcome as many students back into our other programmes, be that another internship or potential graduate position. This placement is the stepping-stone to your future.

Mission & Purpose

Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is a collective of designers, consultants and experts working across 140 countries. Founded to be both humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology and rigour to shape a better world.

Culture & Values

  • Quality of work

Ove Arup was always clear: money is not our main aim, it’s quality that comes first. There are many ways to define ‘quality’ but whatever we do, we aim to produce the most thoughtful, creative and sustainable solutions – for our clients and the communities we work in.

  • Total architecture

Our spirit is collaborative. Working life at Arup is never about titles, we listen in order to create and learn. ‘Total architecture’ simply means bringing everyone together, to benefit from their experience and insights. It also means we constantly evolve, adopting new disciplines, new people, and new ideas.

  • Humane organisation

Ove Arup’s goal was that we should always remain a humane and friendly organisation, however large we became. You’ll find people at all levels of seniority are willing to help, discuss or share their experience. A humane organisation is also one focused on working hard to improve the lives of people our work touches.

  • Straight and honourable dealings

Innovative and inspiring work is always built on trust. That’s why we expect the highest moral standards from our people – work of quality cannot be achieved any other way. A shared commitment to our values is how we produce great work for our clients, with enduring value for the communities around us.

  • Social usefulness

Having a greater purpose than financial gain was how Ove always believed Arup’s work could remain inspiring. Today, social usefulness means many things for us, from pushing designs to be as sustainable and inclusive as possible, to our people’s commitment to community engagement.

  • Reasonable prosperity

Money might not have been Ove Arup’s main priority for the firm, but he recognised the value of rewarding talent and remaining a great employer. Today we offer competitive salaries and benefits, wherever in the world you work for us. And as a membership organisation, we share our profits with our people twice annually.
