Requirements

  • Degree-seeking student currently enrolled at a college or university. Students preferably will have completed two years of college and have previously had at least one internship. Preference is given to more advanced students. Those who have completed undergraduate work are accepted.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, adaptable and flexible.
  • Excellent communication skills and command of the English language and AP style.
  • Technical skills required for some visual journalism team jobs, such as video shooting and editing. Videographer interns should demonstrate strong knowledge of digital media conversion and compression for web-based output. Requires excellent PC and Macintosh skills. Candidates should be well-versed in Final Cut Pro and video compression with Sorenson. Expertise in web video delivery, including live streaming, is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Fellows will work with breaking news, features, editorial and enterprise content teams to report stories in a fast-paced news environment. That may include reporting, writing, editing, shooting photos and videos and online production. Research, database and investigative work are also possibilities, as is appearing in front of a camera for livestream or in-house video work.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills will be encouraged and sharpened.
  • Fellows will learn forms of alternative storytelling.
  • Fellows will work independently and as part of a team to provide perspectives and insights for newsroom and companywide projects identified by senior leadership as part of strategic growth initiatives.
  • Fellows will be called upon to actively participate in daily news meetings with top editors, where they’ll learn how news developments take shape and be asked to contribute ideas.

Application Process

  • Please apply herein and upload your current resume and submit a typewritten letter, not to exceed 500 words. Tell us why you want to be an intern, your ambitions and interests, and about previous experiences in journalism. Include your multimedia skills. Access to published writing clips, photos and videos, and video footage is required as part of the application assessment for all newsroom internship roles. It’s important that these items be combined into a single document upload with your application, preferably in PDF format. The application will only allow one document upload. Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.
