Requirements

  • Most importantly, and in keeping with our firm’s culture, we’re more interested in curiosity, entrepreneurship, and initiative than we are in any particular skill or experience.
  • We’re interested in highly accomplished students with keen analytical aptitude. Strategy and business development interns excel at taking a structured and detailed approach to solving problems, communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), take initiative and lead organizations, and thrive on collaboration.
  • You’re not expected to have previous finance experience, but it’s great if you do. We’ll help you learn everything you need to know, both through our training program and through hands-on experience working with your manager and colleagues.
  • Recent SBD interns majored in fields such as economics, history, international relations, mathematics, and computer science, and we welcome and encourage applications from individuals from all academic disciplines. Students in this program are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
  • The expected monthly base salary for this position is $10,000. Our compensation package includes travel to the internship, overtime for all hours worked over 40 per week, a sign-on bonus, and choice of corporate housing or a summer housing allowance.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll take on projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem solving.
  • You might investigate which markets our investment strategies should target for expansion, evaluate whether and where to open a new office, research prospective new investors for our funds, or develop a plan for launching an opportunistic credit fund.
  • Throughout the summer, you’ll work closely with your manager and other mentors who will support your professional development.
  • You’ll participate in our robust, customized learning curriculum, which is designed to help you strengthen your skills, learn new ones, and build a strong foundational knowledge of our firm and industry.
  • You’ll also have regular opportunities to learn about us and our industry from internal and external experts, get to know employees across the firm, and enjoy events and outings like volunteer days, Broadway musicals, and intern game nights.

Mission & Purpose

The D. E. Shaw group is trusted by investors across the world to manage their assets by seeking the optimal balance of risk and reward. While we’re known as a pioneer in quantitative investing, we also have considerable expertise in areas that involve fundamental analysis or portfolio manager discretion. We use a combination of quantitative and qualitative tools to uncover independent, hard-to-find sources of return across global public and private markets. Founded in 1988 over a small bookstore in downtown New York City, the D. E. Shaw group began with six employees and $28 million in capital and quickly became a pioneer in computational finance. In the early days of exposed pipes and extension cords, tripping on a cable could take out our whole trading system. Today, the firm has more than 2,000 people around the globe and an institutional-grade (and trip-proof) infrastructure, but we still value creativity, entrepreneurship, and the spirit of discovery.
