Requirements

  • We are looking for candidates who are working towards a degree in Materials Science or Engineering (Masters level in General Engineering, Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering) with strong results in all modules (2:1/60% or higher)
  • We're looking students working towards the below qualifications and with the following attributes and skills:
  • Interest/experience in engineering design, manufacturing and fabrication
  • Strong analytical skills
  • We're looking for people who are curious and ready to evolve how you think and work. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. If you can share your knowledge and ideas and encourage others to do the same; whilst having a desire to deliver excellent services for clients – we'd like to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • On this 6-week Summer Internship you'll work alongside skilled professionals and from day one you will be working on real life meaningful projects - adding add value to clients, while exploring challenges with curiosity and creativity.
  • You'll learn from others and begin creating your professional network ready for when you graduate. There are regular learning sessions with our leadership team, opportunities for site visits to local projects and all kinds of social events that will support your learning and development.
  • Our aim is to welcome as many students back into our other programmes be that another internship or potential graduate position. This placement is the stepping-stone to your future.
  • Materials Consulting at Arup exists to ensure materials are used appropriately, working with our colleagues in other Arup disciplines, and external clients; enabling them to manage their costs, programme and risk and helping the owners of existing assets to understand and solve problems.
  • Everything in the built environment relies on the use of materials. As a consequence, the materials team enjoy the opportunity to work in virtually every market that Arup work in, providing specialist materials advice. With experts in concrete, metals, glass, stone, brick, ceramics, timber and composites, we advise at all stages of a project, from concept design through the full life-cycle.
  • Our specialists explore different combinations of materials, devise test programmes and carry out design and field research. This is based on knowledge – from tried and tested processes, such as forming and fabricating metals, to using glass structurally in adventurous new ways, and selecting more sustainable materials and processes to reduce resource consumption and environmental impacts.
  • We apply materials in novel and challenging ways, focussing on the importance of context. For our clients this means enhanced choice, based on optimised cost/value and reduced risks. We are passionate about making materials work and many of our team are members of or advisors to influential industry bodies. Our advice is truly independent and based on the most appropriate solution for a given application because our materials specialists are not linked to material suppliers and do not need to provide work for an in-house test facility.
  • We reduce our clients' risk and provide freedom of choice, particularly when involved in the early stages of a project. This enables our clients to design and build more innovative, challenging and valuable projects. Our rigorous research on materials and manufacturing methods provides reassurance that the materials are used appropriately, aesthetically and cost effectively to produce a robust and durable solution.
  • We are looking for a Summer Intern for a 6 week period between June and August in 2024.

Mission & Purpose

Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is a collective of designers, consultants and experts working across 140 countries. Founded to be both humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology and rigour to shape a better world.

Culture & Values

  • Quality of work

Ove Arup was always clear: money is not our main aim, it’s quality that comes first. There are many ways to define ‘quality’ but whatever we do, we aim to produce the most thoughtful, creative and sustainable solutions – for our clients and the communities we work in.

  • Total architecture

Our spirit is collaborative. Working life at Arup is never about titles, we listen in order to create and learn. ‘Total architecture’ simply means bringing everyone together, to benefit from their experience and insights. It also means we constantly evolve, adopting new disciplines, new people, and new ideas.

  • Humane organisation

Ove Arup’s goal was that we should always remain a humane and friendly organisation, however large we became. You’ll find people at all levels of seniority are willing to help, discuss or share their experience. A humane organisation is also one focused on working hard to improve the lives of people our work touches.

  • Straight and honourable dealings

Innovative and inspiring work is always built on trust. That’s why we expect the highest moral standards from our people – work of quality cannot be achieved any other way. A shared commitment to our values is how we produce great work for our clients, with enduring value for the communities around us.

  • Social usefulness

Having a greater purpose than financial gain was how Ove always believed Arup’s work could remain inspiring. Today, social usefulness means many things for us, from pushing designs to be as sustainable and inclusive as possible, to our people’s commitment to community engagement.

  • Reasonable prosperity

Money might not have been Ove Arup’s main priority for the firm, but he recognised the value of rewarding talent and remaining a great employer. Today we offer competitive salaries and benefits, wherever in the world you work for us. And as a membership organisation, we share our profits with our people twice annually.
