  • HDR is looking for a Summer 2024 Urban Design intern candidate to work in our Berkeley, CA office.
  • As an Urban Design intern at HDR, you will work with a team of urban design planners on different project types and with diverse professionals. Our goal will be to engage you in various facets of our work so that you will gain a better understanding of how your coursework is applied in real-world settings and inspire you to engage in a career in urban design work upon graduation.


  • Required Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or other related program
  • Attention to detail a must
  • Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Suite Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years completed toward degree with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry, with proficiency in Adobe Premier, After Effects or GIS is a plus

  • In the role of Urban Design Intern, we'll count on you to perform tasks including but not limited to:
  • Conduct site analysis, GIS data collection and compilation, case studies, sketching, making diagrams and digital modeling.
  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs
  • Perform assignments under the direct supervision of an Urban Design Planner, Project Manager, or other professionals
  • Participate in the design process, and develop alternative solutions and presentation graphics used to communicate concepts to client or for agency approval
  • Follow through on design development drawings and models, and collaborate with production staff for technical details and completion of construction drawings
  • Perform other duties as needed
