What is the primary role of an Assistant Genetic Technologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital?
The primary role involves assisting in genomic techniques and contributing to the smooth running of the North Thames Rare Disease Genomic Laboratory, including tasks related to DNA preparation and various molecular and cytogenetic techniques.
What specific techniques will I be expected to work with?
You will work with DNA preparation, cytogenetic techniques, molecular targeted techniques, whole genome sequencing (WGS), next-generation sequencing (NGS), and other associated robotic processes.
Is prior experience necessary for this position?
Yes, some demonstrable experience of DNA preparation, molecular and/or cytogenetic techniques is required, and hands-on experience in an accredited diagnostic setting will be an advantage.
How many people work in the Rare Disease Laboratory?
The Rare Disease Laboratory has an establishment of approximately 140 staff, including technologists, clinical and translational scientists, bioinformaticians, and administrators.
What type of services does the genetics laboratory provide?
The genetics laboratory provides in-house diagnostic services for cancer, molecular, and cytogenetic testing, including SNP microarray, karyotyping, FISH, qPCR, QF PCR, and MLPA, as well as next-generation sequencing approaches.
What are my responsibilities regarding health and safety?
You will be required to comply with health and safety policies as part of your responsibilities as an Assistant Genetic Technologist.
Will I need to assist with data entry and documentation?
Yes, part of your role will include data entry of patient sample details, filing and scanning of patient and laboratory documentation, and recording results on the laboratory information system (EPIC Beaker).
