Requirements

  • Applicants will have a bachelor’s or advanced degree, an excellent record of academic and/or professional achievement, and zero to three years of relevant work experience working in an early-career data science, data engineering, or product management setting.
  • The ability to take initiative, dive into details, and manage projects to completion are critical for this role. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, an analytical approach to problem solving, and a rigorous and proactive work ethic are also essential.
  • Individuals with a knack for solving open-ended problems and seeing how small details interrelate to impact the bigger picture (i.e., systems thinking) will excel in this role.
  • Successful candidates will be proficient in using Python for data retrieval, transformation, and visualization. Familiarity with applied statistics is preferred but not required. An advanced working knowledge of Excel is also desired, as is experience with business intelligence programs (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).

Responsibilities

  • You’ll identify processes and projects that could be enhanced or solved by using data science techniques, then create and deploy deliverables in service of these solutions. You’ll perform research and data analysis, including on current and prospective investors, and write and deliver reports to better inform decisions and improve marketing strategies. You’ll work with a diverse group of stakeholders to understand their needs to inform your design, buildout, and delivery of innovative data-driven solutions and analyses. In addition, you’ll liaise with our international software development teams to generate and review improvements that expand and refine the systems used for relationship management, marketing communications, transaction processing, and client experience. This dynamic role will provide the opportunity to tackle data integrity and cleanliness challenges, help develop project management techniques and best practices for the team, and perform ad hoc special projects both within Investor Relations and with other groups at the firm.

Mission & Purpose

The D. E. Shaw group is trusted by investors across the world to manage their assets by seeking the optimal balance of risk and reward. While we’re known as a pioneer in quantitative investing, we also have considerable expertise in areas that involve fundamental analysis or portfolio manager discretion. We use a combination of quantitative and qualitative tools to uncover independent, hard-to-find sources of return across global public and private markets. Founded in 1988 over a small bookstore in downtown New York City, the D. E. Shaw group began with six employees and $28 million in capital and quickly became a pioneer in computational finance. In the early days of exposed pipes and extension cords, tripping on a cable could take out our whole trading system. Today, the firm has more than 2,000 people around the globe and an institutional-grade (and trip-proof) infrastructure, but we still value creativity, entrepreneurship, and the spirit of discovery.
