Requirements

  • Significant recent experience as a journalist – a self-starter with a strong track record of producing radio content for flagship programmes, fixing contributors and editing audio to the highest editorial standards.

Responsibilities

  • Journalists on the Today Programme work to ensure the on-going high standard and creativity of the programme’s output.
  • They Are Principally Responsible For
  • Contributing original ideas and treatments for the day’s stories
  • Finding and booking guests for live interviews and discussions
  • Briefing presenters
  • Commissioning two-ways and packages from newsgathering correspondents
  • Making pieces of audio which meet the highest editorial and technical standards.
  • Journalists Will Also Need To
  • Taking responsibility for programme items; ensuring the journalism is imaginative, creative and of the highest possible quality to fulfil the needs of listeners
  • Programme objectives and strategies aimed at delivering the highest quality journalism
  • Working to ensure that decisions made during production are properly reflected in output
  • Collaboration with Newsgathering to ensure that correspondents and producers understand the programme's needs and are commissioned to meet its editorial requirements
  • Having a well-developed understanding of the law and producer guidelines as it relates to journalism
  • Understanding and implementing Health and Safety policies
  • Understanding and implementing on-air diversity initiatives.
  • The Today Programme is staffed 24 hours a day, 6 days a week and the successful candidate will be required to work a significant number of night shifts and weekends. There is also requirement to work off base on occasion. There may also be times when the journalist does some work for other Radio 4 programmes.
