Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or closely related field.
  • Experience with X-ray diffraction, infrared or Raman spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, or similar spectroscopic techniques.
  • Experience combining multi-instrument data sets (e.g., XRD, IR, and SEM) to interpret complex research samples.
  • Experience with theory and modeling of surface chemical reaction mechanisms and kinetics.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Experience performing self-directed research, presenting talks at conferences and a record of publishing results in established scientific journals.
  • Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Qualifications We Desire:
  • Experience applying analytical surface science techniques (e.g., RAIRS, XPS, AES, or ToF-SIMS).
  • Experience with complex analysis of actinide compounds.
  • Experience with responses of materials in extreme environments, which can include irradiation, pressure, corrosion, or non-ambient temperatures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fundamental and applied experimental work in the field of surface science.
  • Participate in understanding the fundamental surface and interface properties of corrosion using state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and techniques.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address complex problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Document and publish research in peer-reviewed journals and participate in domestic and international conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
