Responsibilities

  • - The appointee will be exposed to all aspects of renal medicine, including renal replacement therapy (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation), acute kidney injury and various sub-specialities within the field of nephrology.
  • - There is extensive teaching and training built in to the rota as well as ample opportunities in audit and research, as well as in the practical procedures of nephrology.
  • - The registrars rotate through a rolling rota with a clinic block, ward blocks, HDU experience, and a dialysis block; these are interspersed with time covering the Renal Assessment Unit, a float week, a referrals week and nights.
  • - During your time in the unit we would aim to provide you with broad experience in all aspects of nephrology.
  • - This will be through your routine work on the wards and on-call, formal teaching, regular attendance at the unit academic meetings, and participation in journal club, as well as through opportunity to attend specialist clinics and complete research projects/QIPs.
  • - You will also have opportunity to attend timetabled biopsy lists (native and transplant) which are consultant supervised, as well as participating in the medical PD catheter list.
  • - Vascaths are inserted on the wards by the SpRs and we have an active interventional radiology department who assist with tunnelled dialysis catheter insertion.

You will gain experience in all aspects of renal medicine, including renal replacement therapy, acute kidney injury, and various sub-specialties within nephrology.

What is the structure of the junior medical team?

The junior medical team consists of 10 clinical registrars, several research registrars, six IMT1 & IMT2 level trainees, three FY2s, and one FY1, along with 3 PAs.

How does the rota work for registrars?

Registrars rotate through a rolling rota that includes clinic blocks, ward blocks, HDU experience, dialysis blocks, and additional time covering the Renal Assessment Unit, float weeks, referrals weeks, and nights.

Will I have opportunities for learning and development?

Yes, there is extensive teaching and training built into the rota, along with formal teaching sessions, academic meetings, journal clubs, and opportunities to attend specialist clinics.

Is there a research component to this role?

Yes, there are ample opportunities for audit, research projects, and quality improvement projects during your time in the unit.

What types of procedures will I participate in?

You will have the opportunity to attend supervisor-led biopsy lists (native and transplant), participate in medical PD catheter lists, and work with the interventional radiology department for tunneled dialysis catheter insertion.
