Requirements

  • Required:
  • Undergraduate student currently enrolled or a recent graduate within the last 2 years
  • OR
  • Graduate student currently enrolled or a recent graduate within the last 2 years
  • An ability and willingness to quickly learn new concepts and skills in a largely self-directed manner.
  • An interest in the actuarial profession, managed health care, and/or data analytics.
  • An ability to interpret, analyze, and quality check data.
  • Desired:
  • One or more actuarial exams completed
  • Prior health care or actuarial knowledge is not required. Prior coding experience is desired but not required; an ability to think programmatically and an eagerness to learn are sufficient.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience programming in a statistical/data language, such as SAS, Python, R, or SQL.

Responsibilities

  • Using Microsoft excel and the application of the intern’s choice (among SAS, SQL, Python, or R), the intern will develop an algorithm that aids in the department’s core functions. The project for the intern will be decided in the first two weeks of the internship in consultation with the intern’s manager.
  • Assist with the department’s regular monthly close processes (g. IBNR reserving, premium revenue forecasting, risk adjustment, etc.).
  • Perform data quality and validation checks.
  • Design, maintain and update Microsoft Excel workbooks
  • Interpret SAS and SQL code.
  • Develop a SAS, SQL, Python, or R program that answers an actuarially-relevant question.
  • Communicate technical information to a broad audience
