Off-cycle Internship



  • The Human-AI eXperiences (HAX) team at MSR AI Frontiers is looking for Research Interns to advance the state-of-the-art in human-AI systems and experiences with a focus on leveraging the capabilities of people and foundation model-based agents to solve real problems and improve people’s lives.


  • We are looking for applicants who have:
  • A drive for real world impact, demonstrated by a passion to build and evaluate working prototypes (e.g., via user studies).
  • A demonstrated track record of influential projects and publications in relevant fields and top-tier conferences and journals (such as CHI, UIST, FAccT, AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML).
  • Coding and hands-on experience working with large foundation models (e.g., OpenAI GPT models, LLAMA etc) and related prompting techniques, frameworks and toolkits (e.g., ICL, CoT, ReACT, Langchain, AutoGen).
  • A team player mindset, characterized by effective communication, collaboration, and feedback skills.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program with relevant major (e.g., Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing).
  • Other Requirements:
  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
  • In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience building or working with systems involving AI or LLMs.
  • Hands-on experience evaluating working prototypes (e.g., via user-studies).
  • Experience publishing academic papers at top-tier conferences and journals as a lead author or essential contributor.
  • Experience working in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
