What is the role of a Junior Sister in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit?
The Junior Sister is responsible for planning, managing, and coordinating clinical care for sick term and preterm babies in the NICU, as well as supporting the development of nursing skills among the staff.
What level of care does the NICU provide?
The NICU provides level 3 medical and surgical care to sick term babies and preterm babies born as early as 22 weeks gestation.
Is there any orientation program for new staff?
Yes, new staff will receive a bespoke orientation program tailored to their needs, as well as a personalized career pathway to support their professional development.
Are there opportunities for career progression?
Yes, the unit actively supports career progression and development through individual career pathways and training opportunities provided by experienced PDNs and Senior Sisters.
Can Junior Sisters work cross-site?
Yes, there are opportunities for Junior Sisters to work cross-site with the Local Neonatal Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital as part of their development.
How does the NICU approach family involvement in care?
The NICU encourages Family Integrated Care and has recently implemented weekly parent-led ward rounds in lower dependency areas.
What kind of support does the unit offer to new nurses?
New nurses receive support from a team of experienced Practice Development Nurses and Senior Sisters to help develop their clinical leadership and nursing skills.
