Responsibilities

  • As the deputy within the Capability Directorate's Space team, you will support the team leader and our small group of military and civilian experts responsible for the development of Defence's future Satellite Communications capabilities and new approaches that will provide resilient alternates to GPS or other space based position services.
  • This work is vital and your contribution far reaching - in the contemporary battlefield our adversaries will use jamming, spoofing and other forms of attack to degrade our communications and navigation capabilities.
  • As these underpin all operational success, we must be ahead of the threat.
  • This includes overseeing the progress of programmes and projects, all in differing stages of their life-cycle and planning future capability choices to match the future operating environment.
  • You’ll work across both UK Strategic Command, externally with Front Line Commands, MOD Centre, and Partners across Government.
  • Innovation is a key aspect of the role, as well as overseeing the associated international activities and relationships.
  • Working with allies to identify opportunities for collaboration would be routine and you will also ensure UKStratCom’s Space work is closely cohered Space Command.
  • Engagement with industry, who deliver our capabilities and whose technology development can inspire our future requirements and investment choices, would also be a regular facet of your work.
  • A core aspect of the role will be supporting and leading the team on a day-to-day basis, helping them realise their potential and ensuring the whole team keeps pace with the variety of reports, returns and outputs that are essential to keeping the projects and programmes on track.
  • Duties will include acting on behalf of the Team Head in their absence, line managing 4x SEOs, generating papers and submissions to support senior decision makers, managing the team's status, tracking gaps, making sure reports are complete and overseeing role training and team development.
  • This post is based at Northwood Headquarters.
  • You would travel to other MOD/Government sites (Southern UK mostly) approx. once a week with periodic overnight or foreign travel.
