Requirements

  • Master of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling granted by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required.
  • Professional knowledge of the rapidly changing principles and practice of medical, clinical, and laboratory genetics required.
  • Must have effective oral and written presentation and communication skills, superior organizational skills and be able to work independently.
  • Computer skills appropriate for laboratory and clinical case management necessary.
  • ABGC Certification and licensure are required.
  • A newly graduated individual, who will be licensed in Minnesota, is required to obtain ABGC certification and MN state licensure within 6 months of graduation. Any exceptions to this must be reviewed and approved by hiring manager and HR.
  • Candidates are responsible for understanding licensure laws in their state of employment.
  • Additional licenses, beyond state of employment, may be recommended in order to provide telehealth services.
  • Obtaining license in state of residence where applicable is recommended if employee works remotely in a state other than their state of employment.

Responsibilities

  • This position is based out of Rochester, MN and requires ability to provide on-site genetic counseling to patients at our Rochester campus
  • The selected candidate will participate in the development and implementation of genetic counseling services in the advancement and translation of genomic medicine joining a team of experienced genetic counselors, nurses and genetic counseling assistants.
  • This team supports multiple clinical services including Predictive Genomics and the Genetic Testing and Counseling (GTAC) Unit.
  • Both clinical services include pre and post-test counseling and test facilitation through onsite or telemedicine appointments.
  • GTAC genetic counselors work closely with a team of physicians in a variety of departments throughout Mayo Clinic with the aim of integrating genomics into subspecialty patient care focusing on rare and undiagnosed diseases.
  • Through the Predictive Genomics clinic, genetic counselors offer predictive, and population based genetic tests to generally healthy patient populations.
  • These programs will grow and continue to provide support and break down barriers to access genetic testing and counseling.
  • Additionally, this GC team supports research studies and translational pilots that study the implementation of large-scale genomics into clinical care.
  • This is a unique opportunity for a genetic counselor to translate their knowledge of clinical and laboratory practice into the exciting and rapidly advancing field of Individualized Medicine.
